School’s out for summer. The celebration is over, and the chorus of “Mom, I’m bored” can be heard all over the neighborhood. Now what?

It’s important to keep your kids active over the summer to avoid them forgetting what they’ve learned in school and to keep you from losing your mind. Luckily, for you and your nerves, the Elk Grove Village Public Library has numerous fun, free, and family-friendly activities that appeal to children as young as six months.

Read to the Dog allows children the opportunity to read in a positive environment that encourages the love of reading by partnering with an attentive, non-judgmental therapy dog. This program requires pre-registration and is available every Monday from June 22nd through July 27th.

Tie-Dye T-shirts gives children a place to be messy and creative that you don’t have to clean up! Additionally, it supplies them with a fun, festive souvenir that they can be proud to wear all summer. Space is limited for the June 25th activity, so sign-up online at http://www.egvpl.org/evanced/lib/eventcalendar starting June 6th.

Musical Instrument Petting Zoo – on July 8th from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.- is brought to you by The Metropolis School of the Performing Arts and will help your child find their inner musician by allowing them to experiment with a wide variety of instruments.

Fun Factory Saturdays introduces your child to the world of crafting. Every Saturday starting on June 6th from 9:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., children are given a new crafting project that they can complete on their own or with help from a parent/guardian.

Drop-in Storytimes are available throughout the week and cater to every age with storytelling programs like Baby Tales, Alphabet Soup, and Polish Story Time. Check website for specific times.

Lastly, the Babysitter’s Training Course is offered for ages 10-16. This course is eight hours long and is taught by a certified teacher, equipping your child with all the necessary skills and emergency training to be an excellent babysitter. This course is available Monday, July 13 and Wednesday, July 15 from 1-5pm.

The majority of these Elk Grove Village programs are free but some require pre-registration. Check the Highlights Newsletter for a complete list of programs and their requirements.
