Gum Disease is also referred to as periodontal disease and can inflict a lot of damage to not only your mouth but other parts of your body as well. Unfortunately, many people that are affected by this oral illness underestimate the severity and long-term repercussions that it can cause. If you are experiencing symptoms of gum disease such as bleeding from inflamed gums when you are brushing, you should be aware that the inflammation can end up spreading throughout your body affecting it in many different ways. Some of these leading to other illnesses like; heart attacks, Rheumatoid arthritis, Dementia, Premature births, and Diabetes.

Depending on your level of infection you can experience one of three stages of gum disease.

  1. Gingivitis – Symptoms include:
  • Red and swollen gums
  • Gums that easily bleed while brushing and flossing
  • Receding gum line
  • Bad breath

  1. Periodontitis – Symptoms include:
  • Swollen, bright red gums
  • Gums that are tender to the touch
  • Spaces between teeth, causing pockets to form
  • A buildup of pus between teeth and gums
  • Bad breath or a bad taste in the mouth
  • Loose teeth that don’t fit together when you bite

  1. Advanced Periodontitis – Symptoms include:
  • Chronic bad breath
  • Swollen and bleeding gums
  • Severe receding gums
  • Deep periodontal pockets
  • Teeth that are loose and
  • Misaligned teeth

If you are suffering from any of these 3 stages all hope is not lost. Although Gingivitis is the only stage of the disease that is repairable there is other options to treat and help minimize the effects of the other stages. Laser gum dentistry utilizes a dental laser to remove your inflamed gum tissue from your toot’s root.  This treatment is one of the few treatments that can manage your periodontal problem.
