We’re all guilty of saying we’ll finally start eating healthier, working out, and fulfilling countless other New Year’s resolutions once January 1st hits. But how often do we actually follow through on these promises to ourselves? The truth is probably a lot less often than we’d like to admit. It can be hard to commit to new habits with work, school, and many other responsibilities!

However, research suggests it takes 21 days to form a habit. That’s just three short weeks! This year, make better dental hygiene your resolution. If you follow the tips below for the rest of this month, you’ll have a healthier smile for the rest of this year!

In 2019 I will:

  • Brush my teeth at least twice per day: Brushing is the number one way to remove plaque and prevent tooth decay. Use a soft bristled brush to ensure less damage to your gums when removing plaque, and choose a size and shape that allows you to easily access all areas of your mouth.
  • Floss daily: Flossing is critical to preventing gum disease because it allows you to remove plaque from between the teeth where the toothbrush doesn’t reach. The type of floss you choose is based on personal preference, but remember a waxed floss has a coating that makes it easier to get between tightly spaced teeth.
  • Use mouth rinse: In addition to proper brushing and flossing, an antimicrobial mouth rinse reduces the presence of bacteria and plaque that causes gum disease. A fluoride rinse helps reduce and prevent tooth decay.
  • Protect my mouth against sugary beverages: On top of reducing the amount of sweetened drinks you consume daily, drink plenty of water with meals and sweetened beverages to wash away sugars and acids. Additionally, use a straw to reduce the amount of direct contact your teeth have with sweetened beverages. Finally, you can supplement sugary drinks with alternatives such as unsweetened tea, smoothies, milk, or flavored water.
