You may have the choice to choose between conventional surgery or laser surgery if you have periodontal disease and it has advanced to the point that you need surgery. Each patient is special and Dr. Jig Patel will help you make the right choice for your own mouth, but before you make your choice, we want you to understand the difference between LANAPⓇ and conventional gum surgery in Schaumburg, IL

How Does Traditional Surgery Work?

The doctor first pushes the tissue back with a scalpel for better visibility in conventional surgery. The pocket it was cleaning at this stage and the depth is rising as the doctor cuts away tissue. Membrane or bone grafting materials may be used to reassemble the gum tissue to the root surface of the tooth. This type of surgery includes the usual sutures and recovery from any kind of operation

How Does LANAP Work?

Using modern, state-of – the-art technology, a laser is used to determine what is diseased tissue and what is safe to extract bacteria and diseased tissue from the gums without the need to cut, patch or damage the still existing healthy tissue. The laser gives those suffering from gum disease a minimally invasive alternative and needs some type of treatment.

The Benefits of LANAP

While traditional surgery may still be necessary in some cases, patients benefit in many ways if they opt for LANAP.

  • Decreased pain
  • Less gum recession as less healthy tissue is removed
  • Faster healing time because there is no cut or scalpel involved
  • Both treatments offer great long terms results, although LANAP is predictable when it comes to connective reattachment and bone regeneration

As technology advances and treatment options improve, we are proud to offer the best to our patients at the Schaumburg Dental Studio. If you are interested in gum grafting surgery, traditional or laser, contact us today to schedule an appointment at our Schaumburg, IL offices..
