Back to School Dental Hacks - Schaumburg, IL

It’s undeniable. Whether you’re excited about school starting again or dreading the return of homework and shuffling your kids from activity to activity – we need to prepare. The beginning of the school year is an extremely hectic time, and dental hygiene is often left by the wayside. Here are some easy-to-follow dental hacks for you and your family to make sure you start the year with a strong, confident smile.

Schedule The Year's Dental Exams Early

Once you receive the school’s academic calendar, call your dentist and schedule any necessary appointments for you and your family. That way, you can avoid taking your child out of class for a dental emergency and make sure they are receiving the necessary dental care throughout the year.

Instill Regular Teeth Brushing Habits

The start of the school year is the perfect time to establish (or reestablish) healthy dental hygiene. Brushing and flossing should be included as part of the family’s daily routine – no exceptions. Remember to brush twice and floss once daily.

Make Dental Hygiene Fun

One of the only good things about going back to school is buying new school supplies. Why not add a new, fun toothbrush too? Let your child pick out any toothbrush they desire.

Remember to change toothbrushes every 3 months or after an illness. Having trouble remembering when to replace your brushes? Use your child’s report card as a regular reminder.

Eating Healthy

As everyone knows, brushing is only part of the battle for good dental hygiene. The other component is eating the right foods. Include healthy items, including whole grains, milk, cheese, raw vegetables, yoghurt or fruit, into your child’s lunch and snacks. Additionally, you’ll need to cut back on sugary foods and soft drinks to avoid those dreaded cavities.

Be Safe During Sports

Sports are great for a child’s development. It teaches them perseverance and teamwork. It also increases their risk of knocking out their pearly whites. Wearing a properly fitted mouth guard while participating in organized sports, PE classes, or playground activities can mean the difference between friendly competition and an emergency trip to the dentist.
